LAVATER, John Caspar. Essays on Physiognomy. London: 1789-1798. 3 vols. in 5, 8vo (326 x 259mm.) Numerous engraved plates and illustrations. (Some spotting or browning.) Contemporary green morocco gilt, the spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettering pieces in the second and third, the others with repeat decoration in gilt, g.e. (extremities slightly scuffed). Provenance: Viscount Birkenhead (armorial bookplates).
