LOT 3021
MITFORD, Mary Russell (1787-1855). An autograph letter signed, to 'My dear friend' [probably Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786-1846)], from 'Three Mile Cross, Sunday afternoon' [but with n.d.]. 2pp. on a single 8vo sheet (187 x 110mm.) replying to an earlier letter in which her correspondent suggested that he might visit: Miss Mitford suggests a suitable day and time and asks that he take a certain train 'we will send for you at the Station - if you will remain at the Waiting Room there… you shall be bought here forthwith, in our Phaeton with a head &c, so that even if it should rain you will take no damage - & we will send you back in the same manner in time for the last train... We have just been talking of you Miss James & I - & she speaks of your sailor son with great liking & interest - But this we will talk of when we meet …. Kindest regards to Mrs. Haydon & the young people' (browned, old creasing); with a copy of an 1893 edition 'Our Village'. Note: the final line suggests that author Miss Mitford sent this letter to artist B.R. Haydon. She is best known for 'Our Village', and became friends with Haydon after he painted her portrait (2).
