Photographic frontispiece, 15 photographic plates, 3 sections charts and diagrams (1 folding), 7 folding maps (1 folding), 4 folding maps loosely inserted in pocket at rear. (Some spotting and browning, marginal tear with minor loss to p.vii, minor marginal tears without loss to pp.429-438.) Original blue cloth, title blocked in gilt to upper-cover, spine gilt, t.e.g. (extremities lightly bumped, scuffed and rubbed, spine faded to brown, slightly soiled). Spence 574. Provenance: Michael Gilkes (signed and dated '1945' to front-free endpaper). - And eleven other volumes relating to the Antarctic (including: G. HARTWIG. 'The Polar World: a Popular Description of Man and Nature in the Arctic and Antarctic Regions of the Globe'. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1869). Provenance: The Michael Gilkes Collection (12).
