London: William Edward Painter, 1850. First edition, 8vo (220 x 136mm.) Engraved frontispiece, numerous engraved illustrations and headpieces, 1 folding map, 16pp. advertisements at rear. (Light browning, occasional light spotting and minor soiling, marginal tear without loss repaired with adhesive tape to folding map.) Original cloth blocked in blind, spine gilt (extremities bumped and lightly scuffed, some recolouring, upper joint starting to split at head of spine). Provenance: David Commings (signed and dated 'August 3, 1877' to front pastedown); E. Smedley (signature to front pastedown); The Michael Gilkes Collection.
