GIBBON, Edward. The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire… new. London: 1848. 8 vols., 8vo (215 x 133mm.) Engraved portrait frontispiece, 2 engraved folding maps. (Light browning, offsetting and spotting to frontispiece ad title-page, some browning and offsetting to engraved folding maps.) Contemporary calf, spines gilt in six compartments, lettering pieces to second and third compartments, the others with repeat foliate scroll decoration in gilt (extremities lightly bumped and scuffed, occasional minor soiling, spines slightly faded). Provenance: Henry Foley (armorial bookplate to front pastedowns).
