London & Glasgow: William Collins, Sons, and Company., [n.d. but preface dated 1871]. 2 vols., folio (373 x 260mm.) Numerous illustrations to vol. I, 64 double-page engraved plates to vol. II. (Light browning and spotting, marginal tear with loss to title-page of vol. I, soiling to p.227 of vol. I, marginal damp-staining to vol. II, heavy browning to plate IX of vol. II.) Contemporary cloth blocked in gilt (extremities bumped and scuffed, damp-stained and soiled, rebacked with old spines laid-down, reinforced corners, endpapers replaced to vol. II). Provenance: from the estate of the late Michael Gilkes FRCS, FRCOphth., FRGS.
