							LOT 3133
BYRON. - [Caroline LAMB.] Verses from Glenarvon: to which is Prefixed The Original Introduction. London: printed for Henry Colburn, 1819. Signed by the author Caroline Lamb to half-title, 8vo (183 x 112mm.) 3 engraved plates, 1p. tipped-in a.l.s. by Lamb to front free endpaper, original watercolour portrait of Lady Caroline Lamb to preliminary blank attributed to Eliza Jones. (Minor marginal browning and occasional light soiling.) Contemporary straight-grain morocco, g.e. (worn, upper cover detached). Note: when the novel 'Glenarvon' was published, it was an open secret that this was written by Lady Caroline Lamb and was widely understood to fictionalise the account of her affair with Lord Byron. Byron responded to the novel 'I read Glenarvon too by Caro Lamb… God damn!' and whether it was a kiss-and-tell or more likely a 'f*** and publish'. Lady Caroline was known to have called Byron 'mad, bad and dangerous to know'. Provenance: Miss Eliza Jones (inscription stating that it was purchased at her library sale and the portrait is in her hand); Stainforth (armorial bookplate to front pastedown); Robert Milnes-Crewe (bookplate to front pastedown); The West Horsley Place Collection.
