                ART JOURNAL. The Art-Union, a Monthly Journal of the Fine Arts. London: 1839-1885. 49 vols. 4to (321 x 235mm to 275 x 213mm.) Profusely illustrated with engraved plates, etchings and mezzotints. (Some spotting to preliminaries, occasional damp-stain to margins.) Late 19th century red half-morocco over marbled paper boards, black and green morocco lettering pieces to the spines, vol. 1875 bound in red cloth and vol. 1885 in burgundy half-morocco (rubbing to extremities, one board detached). Note: this complete run from 1839-1885 contains the 1851 and 1862 Exhibition Catalogues. The Art-Union was re-named 'The Art Journal' from 1848. The 1846 vol. contains the original Talbotype by William Henry Fox Talbot, it being one of the first appearances of a photographic print in a magazine. Provenance: Worthing Public Library (bookplate to front pastedowns) (49).
