Note: Dibdin wrote the song 'Tom Bowling', often played at the last night of the proms. His patriotic songs were used to maintain public spirit in the ongoing war with France. His 'manner of coming on the stage was in a happy style; he ran on sprightly with a nearly happy face, like a friend who enters hastily to impart to you some good news'.
