SPENSER, Edmund. The Faerie Queen: the Shepheards Calendar together with The Other Works of England's Arch-Poet, Edm. Spenser collected into one Volume, and carefully corrected. [London:] by H.L. for Mathew Lownes, 1611. Folio (270 x 179mm). General title with figurative woodcut borders, dedication to Queen Elizabeth I, woodcut initials, head and tail-pieces, separate title for the 'Second Part of the Faerie Queene' dated 1609, FQ ends at Hh3, with 'Two Cantos of Mutabilitie' dated 1609 at rear with running pagination, and with 'A Letter of the Authors, expounding his whole intention in the course of this work...', woodcut initials and ornaments, separate title for 'The Shepheards Calender' dated 1611, initials and ornaments for every month, and 'Colin Clouts Come Home Againe' with separate title and other poems, and with 'Prothalamion', 'Four Hymnes', 'Daphnaida', 'Complaints Containing...' and 'The Teares...', and 'The Fate of the Butterfly' all with separate titles dated 1611; and translations of Du Bellay, 'Vergil's Gnat' and Petrarch's 'Vision'. (With hand-written notes to initial blank, browning to title, minor soiling to margins, marginal damp-stain O3-O6, two rear blanks replaced.) 19th century brown half-morocco (inner joint broken, minor rubbing). Note: stanza 1 at B3r begins 'Youg knight' and the R3r catchword is 'she'; the FQ [STC 23083.3], 'A Letter of the Authors…' [STC 23086.3], 'Shepheards Calender' [STC 23093.5]. Provenance: Tho. Carnithan (ink name to first text leaf of FQ); Joyce Cary, novelist, (ink name verso of front free endpaper).
