                TRAVEL. - Xavier Hommaire de HELL. Travels in the Steppes of the Caspian Sea, the Crimea, the Caucasus, &c. London: Chapman and Hall, 1847. First English edition, 8vo (206 x 121mm.) Frontispiece after J.W.M. Turner, tissue-guard. (Toning, occasional spotting to preliminaries.) Original green cloth, blind-tooled with gilt design to upper and spine, g.e. (mark to lower cover). Note: initially began as a geological expedition, the book with considerable contribution from Xavier's wife, became a more ethnographic and sociological work on the people and institutions of Southern Russia and the neighbouring regions. Provenance: William F. St. Leger (Kingstown School prize bookplate to the front pastedown).
