CLEAVELAND, E. A Genealogical History of the Noble and Illustrious Family of Courtenay, in Three Parts. Exeter: Edward Farley, 1735. Folio (349 x 218mm.) Engraved initials and ornaments, 13 genealogies. (Browning, occasional spotting, some pencil annotations to margins and f.f.e.p..) Near contemporary tree calf, red morocco lettering piece and repeating floral gilt designs to the spine (lightly rubbed extremities). Note: the Courtenay's of Powderham Castle are one of the oldest families in England, mentioned in the Domesday Book, and the Castle was the site of a long and bitter siege during the Civil War. Includes some hand-written notes and related ephemera.
