EVOLUTION. - [Pierre Louis Moreau de MAUPERTUIS]. Venus Physique. [N.p.: The Hague?], 1745. 12mo (138 x 74mm.) Title, in 2 parts, 9pp. 'Table des Matieres' to rear of part 2. (Occasional spotting, browning, contemporary ink to title.) Contemporary mottled calf, red morocco lettering piece to the spine (some loss to base of spine). Note: first edition of part 2 of the treatise, second edition of part 1. By some distance, a long fore-runner to Mendel and Darwinian evolutionary ideas. Maupertuis ideas of bi-parental heredity and epigenesis and thoughts on mutation were so radically new that he may have published this work anonymously to avoid repercussions.
