YOUNG, William. The History of Athens, politically and philosophically considered. London: J. Robson, 1786. Second edition, 4to (263 x 206mm.) Appendix to rear. (Browning, spotting to front and rear leaves, marginal loss to p.389.) Contemporary diced calf, gilt borders, gilt lettering to spine (rubbing to spine ends, some staining to covers, front pastedown lifting). Note: first published in 1777 under the title 'The Spirit of Athens', this work garnered Young a measure of praise and fame before embarking on his political career and his colonial governorship of Tobago. Provenance: Caroling Young, daughter of the author (name in pencil to initial blank); C. Hutton (name in pencil to title).
