LOT 3171
PRINTING. - The Gill Sans-Serif Family. Leyland, Lancashire: The Mould Type Foundry, [circa 1928.] 4to (277 x 208mm.) Numerous examples of the Gill Sans-Serif typeface. (Toning.) Original card covers, green lettering to upper cover. Note: scarce. Eric Gill was commissioned by Stanley Morison, executive of Monotype, to develop further Gill's initial designs for a typeface. Morrison hoped that it would become a competitor to the German Sans-Serif types being created at the time. Gill's clean and modern design was launched by Monotype in 1928 and soon became popular in poster and advertising design, as well as on the covers of Penguin Books. - And a further six booklets and prospectuses relating to printing (including another Sans Serif design, 'Granby', published by 'Stephenson, Blake & Co.', [circa 1930], 4to) (7).
