LOT 3174
BINDINGS. - Constance SMEDLEY. The Daughter. London: Archibald Constable, 1908. First edition, 8vo (184 x 113mm.) (Toning to margins.) Contemporary green morocco bound by Ellen G. Woolrich, gilt ruled, an inscription in gilt on the turn-in, g.e. (rubbing to the raised bands). Note: the inscription in gilt reads 'To the Donjon, With Love and Thanks For All The Help'. It's possible that this copy was a presentation binding from the author. Constance Smedley founded the Lyceum Club for Women in London. She was brought up in Birmingham around many Arts and Craft connections. M. Tidcombe's book 'Women Binders 1880-1920' tells that Ellen G. Woolrich was an American who trained as a binder in London and, as she exhibited at the Arts and Crafts Society Exhibition, is likely to have trained under Sangorski and Sutcliffe u . - And a further twelve volumes (including a bound copy of George Speaight's 'Juvenile Drama', 1946, 8vo) (13).
