OCCULT. - Richard SAUNDERS. Physiognomie, and Chiromancie, Metoposcopie, the Symmetrical Proportions and Signal Moles of the Body… with the Subject of Dreams Made Plain: Whereunto is Added The Art of Memory. London: by H. Brugis for Nathaniel Brook, 1671. Second edition ('very much enlarged'), folio (289 x 181mm.) 3 parts in 1, separate title to second part dated 1670, and 'A Treatise of the Moles of the Body' also dated 1670, engraved portrait frontispiece, 1 engraved plate, 3 full-page woodcuts and numerous smaller woodcut illustrations, 7pp. publisher's advertisements to rear, a prayer in manuscript to lower margin of p.50 in an early 18th century hand, 5pp. of manuscript notes to rear containing cabalistic tables, diagrams and correspondences, in the same early 18th century hand. (Frontispiece laid-down with minor loss to margins, marginal loss and chipping to many leaves due to marginal damp-damage, especially in part 1, browning, occasional spotting, marginal insect damage from R1-Bb2, tear with no loss to b2, lacking blanks and the 'Peroratio leaf', irregular pagination as normal.) Early 19th century blind-tooled morocco, black morocco lettering piece to the spine (some wear to spine, slight loss, remains of label to base of spine, endpapers replaced). Note: the manuscript notes to the rear are a transcription of chapter 22 of Henrich Cornelius Agrippa's 'Three Books of Occult Philosophy'. Richard Saunders studied hermeneutics and practised astrology and chiromancy. He was a friend of Elias Ashmole - to whom the book is dedicated- and was a part of astrologer William Lilly's circle.
