TOLKIEN, J.R.R. The Lord of the Rings. London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd., 1955-1956. 3 vols., first editions, mixed impressions, 8vo (221 x 140mm.) 3 folding maps. (Toning, light spotting to some preliminaries.) Original red cloths, gilt lettering to spines (spine ends bumped, some corner damp-staining to upper covers of 'The Fellowship of the Ring' and 'The Two Towers'), dust-jackets (chipping and fading to spine panels and partial loss to top of spine panel of 'The Return of the King', lettering affected, browning, red cloth dye to upper panel of 'The Two Towers'). Note: the 'Fellowship of the Ring' is a fifth impression in a fifth impression dust-jacket, 'The Two Towers' is a fourth impression in a third impression dust-jacket, 'The Return of the King' is a second impression in a second impression dust-jacket. Provenance: N.J. Monk (gift inscribed to on the front-free endpapers) (3).
