A Cartier Tank Obus 18ct gold cased gentleman's wristwatch, the signed European Watch & Clock Co Inc movement detailed '18 jewels 8 Adj. Swiss', the square painted dial with black Arabic numerals, blued steel hands and signed 'Cartier', the square case with bullet shaped Obus lugs, the back secured by four screws to the band, the case back interior numbered '21720', the case back numbered '21720' and '25873' (?) and detailed 'Made in France', French hallmarks and import mark London 1928 by Cartier Ltd, case width 2.5cm, case length including lugs 3.1cm, total weight 21.8g (lacking winder), with gilt tooled leather Cartier box. Note: the case back with engraved presentation inscription 'To Cyril E.D. Lambe, R.N. from Lord Rothermere October 1929'. Edward Lambe was a Royal Marine during the First World War, and received some personal belongings of Vere Harmsworth after he was shot and killed in November 1916. Edward eventually returned the belongings to Lord Rothermere (Harold Harmsworth) in 1928. The watch was sent to C.E.D. Lambe in October 1929 as a gift of appreciation. Lord Rothermere was a leading newspaper proprietor and was appointed the first Air Minister during the First World War. He sadly lost two of his three sons during the war, including Vere, his second son.
