Chen Wen Hsi (1906-1992) - a Chinese watercolour painting depicting two gibbons amidst blossoming branches, black painted signature and red seal to upper left corner, 33cm x 44cm, framed and glazed, offered with a Chen Wen Hsi exhibition catalogue. Provenance: purchased by the current vendor at the Exhibition of Chinese Paintings by Chen Wen Hsi, The Old & New Art Gallery, Tanglin Shopping Centre, Singapore, in 1979. Note: Chen Wen Hsi is one of Singapore's most acclaimed artists and a pioneer of the Nanyang Art Movement. He was born in Guangdong, China, in 1906 and later studied art at the Shanghai College of Art and Sin Hwa Academy of Fine Art, Shanghai. He settled in Singapore in 1948, where he taught at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. In 1964 he was awarded the Public Service Star for his contribution to the fine arts of Singapore.
