A Japanese gold lacquer kobako box and cover, by the Zohiko Company, 19th century, of rectangular form, finely decorated in gold hiramaki-e and kirigane with two cranes beneath pine trees and clouds, the interior with nashiji decoration, gilt seal mark of Zohiko to underside, length 9.3cm, width 7.8cm, depth 2.4cm. Provenance: ex collection of Claudio Perino, a keen collector of Japanese, Chinese and Far Eastern works of art. Note: the Zohiko Company is a famous Kyoto lacquer company, established in 1661 and still active today.
