LOT 4002
DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge. Curiosa Mathematica. Part II Pillow-Problems Thought Out During Wakeful Hours. London: Macmillan & Co., 1895. Fourth edition, 8vo (181 x 117mm.) Diagrammatic frontispiece and illustrations, 1p. advertisement to rear. (First and last leaves browned, toning.) Original tan pictorial cloth (spine browned, finger-marked, light spotting to upper cover). Note: contains a preface for this fourth edition as well as the preface for the second edition. In the latter, Dodgson explains that he has changed the title from ‘sleepless nights’ to ‘wakeful hours’ because concerned friends were worried that he suffered from insomnia. He writes that he has never suffered insomnia but that working out mathematical problems in his mind was a way of countering ‘the harassing thoughts that are apt to invade a wholly-unoccupied mind’. Provenance: W. Parnell-Smith (ink name inscribed to front pastedown).
