LOT 4117
CHURCHILL, Winston (editor). The British Gazette. London: H.M.S.O., 5-13th May 1926. No. 1-8 [all published]. Large 4to (598 x 468mm.) (Some tearing along folds, all browned, no. 1 heavily, some chipping to margins.) Later blue buckram cloth portfolio (fading, damp-stain verso covers). Note: edited by Winston Churchill during the General Strike as a propaganda exercise to convince strikers to return to work. It ran everyday for 8 issues between 5th-13th May, except for Sunday 9th. While there are no articles assigned to Churchill there is one in the last issue called ‘The Birth and Life of ‘The British Gazette’’ which can reasonably be attributed to him. It ends, speaking of his own newspaper, with the Churchillian phrase ‘It becomes a memory, but it remains a monument’ (8).
