LOT 3025
A scarce Roman Empire Augustus silver denarius 27 BC-14 AD, obverse with laureate head facing right, reverse with eight-rayed comet with tail upwards, detailed left and right 'DIVVS-IVLIVS' (some contact marks and cleaning). Note: the reverse of this coin celebrates one of the most famous astronomical events of antiquity, sometimes referred to as the 'Great Comet' or 'Julian Star'. It was used by Octavian, Julius Caesar's heir, as proof of his adoptive father's divinity. The comet was so bright that it could be seen during the day.
Estimate: £60 – £100
