MAPS. – William CAMDEN. Britannia: or a Chorographical Description of Great Britain and Ireland… Revised, Digested, and Published, with Large Additions, by Edmund Gibson. London: James and John Knapton, John Darby, Arthur Bettesworth et al., [circa 1730.] Vol. 1 [only, of 2]. Second edition, later issue, folio (396 x 241mm.) Title in red and black, engraved portrait frontispiece, 36 double-paged engraved maps after Robert Morden, including 2 folding, 9 engraved plates of coins, woodcut and engraved illustrations in the text, including Stonehenge. (Small hole in ‘Berkshire’ map, a few with marginal spotting, marginal loss to d2.) Near contemporary panelled calf, later morocco lettering pieces to the spine (heavily scuffed and rubbed covers). Note: the second edition of Camden’s Britannica- the first with Morden’s maps- was published in 1722. This undated later issue is recorded by Skelton as being published circa 1730. [Skelton, 117.]
