LOT 4021
A fine Japanese sankaku-yari or triangular spearhead, probably late 15th century, with triangular-section head, head length 17.5cm, one face with fullered groove and marked with a bonji, the signed tang with double hole piercings, with later wood mounts, overall length 40cm. Provenance: the collection of the late Roald Knutsen (1933-2025); purchased from John Harding, July 1962, for £8. Note: illustrated in ‘Japanese Polearms’ by Roald M. Knutsen, The Holland Press, London: 1963, page 172, figure 35. Roald Knutsen identified the signature as Muramasa and his research showed Muramasa was probably part of the Sengo school of Kuwana in Ise province and probably second generation in the family line.
