TRIALS. – John POULTER. The Discoveries of John Poulter, alias Baxter; Who was apprehended for robbing Dr. Hancock, of Salisbury, on Clarken Down, near Bath… being a full Account of all the Robberies he has committed, and the surprising Tricks and Frauds he has practised for the Space of five Years… Written wholly by Himself. Sherborne: R. Goadby, sold by W. Owen, 1754. Eleventh edition, 4to (223 x 143mm.) 48pp. (Title dust-soiled, marginal creasing.) String-bound. Note: having been captured Poulter named his various accomplices who were all then arrested, and are listed in Poulter’s account. There is also advice to the public on the methods used by thieves and robbers, and he provides a glossary of terms (‘commonly called cant’) that thieves use. He was hung the year following his arrest, ‘acknowledging he deserv’d to die, but most of his Accomplices much more so’. – And a related work (‘The Trial of Lawrence Earl Ferrers, for the Murder of John Johnson’, 1760, folio) (2).
