LOT 340
A late 17th century Dutch miniature toy silver tea caddy and cover of rectangular form, the cylindrical cover decorated with a bust portrait of King James II, Amsterdam 1688-1704 by Jan Breda, weight 26.6cm, height 4.4cm. Provenance: the private collection of the late Guy and Sylvia Watkins. Note: King James II was the last Catholic monarch of England before he was deposed in 1688. William of Orange and his English wife Mary were invited to assume the English throne, with their joint reign known as that of William and Mary. It is likely this caddy was produced in 1688 or 1689 to commemorate this event.
