[N.p. but Sydney, Australia:] 26 November 1903. Folio (322 x 200mm.) 45 plates and plans backed onto linen, the majority lithographed and folding. (Occasional minor browning.) Contemporary buckram (somewhat soiled and rubbed). Provenance: City & Guilds Central Technical College Library (inkstamps to some text leaves, verso and occasionally recto of plates, binding).

LEWIS, Samuel. A Topographical Dictionary of Scotland. London: S. Lewis and Co., 1846. Supplemental map volume only, 4to (321 x 240mm.) Hand-coloured engraved folding map in six parts. (Minor spotting, maps torn without loss.) Original cloth (faded and slightly soiled, extremities bumped, slightly affected by damp).

JOHNSTON, A.K., and G.H. JOHNSTON. The Handy Royal Atlas of Modern Geography. Edinburgh & London: W. & A.K. Johnston, Limited, 1911. Folio (370 x 246mm.) 61 double-page colour plates, (including two double-page colour frontispieces of the North and South Pole) [numbered 1-51, 3A, 27A, 29A, 30A, 36A, 37A, 48A, 51A]. Title, dedication, 80pp. index to rear, e.g. (mild spotting to title and some to front-free endpaper, a discreet inner hinge tape repair.) Original green half morocco, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt to the second and sixth compartment (extremities rubbed and slightly scuffed). - And one other atlas by W. & A.K. Johnston ('Handy Royal Atlas', 1944, 4to). Provenance: R.F. Mitchell (bookplate to front pastedown) (2).

AFRICA. - Henry M. STANLEY. Coomassie and Magdala… the Story of Two British Campaigns in Africa. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, & Searle, 1874. First edition, 8vo (220 x 134mm.) Half-title, frontispiece with tissue-guard, title, 2 folding maps, 16 full-page plates (Creasing and small tear to the larger map, one or two repairs to the plates, new pastedowns and endpapers.) Original green cloth (rebacked with original spine laid down, bumped to extremities, slight fading to gilt). - And eight more volumes on African travel (including John Speke, 'The Journal of the Discovery of the Source of the Nile', 1863, first edition, 8vo) (9).

Small 4to (265 x 220mm.) 3 colour illustrations, numerous black and white illustrations, all by the author. (Light spotting to the fore-edge.) Original cloth, lettering piece to spine, dust-jacket (mild browning to spine, shelfwear to head and foot). Provenance: 'Sandy' (presentation inscription signed by the author to front-free endpaper). - And eighteen other volumes by or on the work of C.F. Original blue cloth (bumped to extremities), dust-jacket, onlaid colour illustration to upper-cover (slight shelfwear to spine ends). - And four other volumes on butterflies - Indian, Jamaican and African (including 'Pennington's Butterflies of Southern Africa', second edition, 1994, 4to) (5).

ART & ANTIQUE REFERENCE. - F.B.COCKETT. Peter Monamy 1681-1749 and His Circle. Woodbridge, Suffolk: Antique Collectors' Club, 2000. 4to (285mm x 217mm.) Numerous colour illustrations. Original cloth blocked in gilt, dust-jacket (slight shelfwear to upper edge). - And a quantity of other volumes relating to art, antiques and collectables (a quantity).

DUMAS, Alexandre. The Count of Monte Christo… a Romance, illustrated. London: E. Smith, [n.d. but circa 1846.] 4to (279 x 216mm.) Numerous illustrations (Creasing to the title.) Later red morocco (inner joint entirely cracked and upper board held by the spine cover only, bumped to all extremities, p.39-46 now loose). Note: this text retains the early printing of 'H' in the title of Cristo and '24th February' in the first line suggesting that it is a translation based on the first edition in French. Dumas' novel was hugely popular in France and amidst the race among English publishers to translate the novel rumours began to circulate about its possible erotic content. COPAC shows no trace of this 'Fleet Street' publisher so it's likely that this is a pirate copy of that early edition.

RAPIN DE THOYRAS, Paul. The History of England… translated… by N. Tindal… the second edition. London: James, John and Paul Knapton, 1832-1833. 2 vols., folio (405 x 240mm.) Titles in red and black, portrait frontispieces, 40 engraved plates, 9 tables or genealogies (2 folding), and 3 folding maps ?only. (Occasional minor soiling.) Contemporary mottled calf (extremities scuffed and rubbed, joints splitting). Provenance: Jolliffe (probably Hylton Jolliffe, armorial bookplate). - And one other volume by Rapin de Thoyras (3).

CRUICKSHANK, George. A Handbook for Posterity: or recollections of ""Twiddle Twaddle"". London: W.T. Spencer, 1896. Limited edition of 200 copies, this number 2 of 50 with coloured plates and initialled by the engraver and publisher, 8vo (234 x 162mm.) Colour frontispiece, coloured title vignette and 60 hand-coloured plates after Cruickshank. Contemporary calf-backed boards, t.e.g (extremities of spine lightly scuffed). - And sixteen others the majority illustrated works or part-works (17).

DORÉ, Gustave (illustrator). CERVANTES. L'Ingenieux Hidalgo Don Quichotte. Paris: Librairie de L. Hachette et C. 1869. First edition of Don Quixote in French, 2 vols., folio (361 x 260mm.) Numerous illustrations by Doré. (Adhesive tape repairs to half-title and title of vol. 1, creasing to preliminaries of vol. 2, considerable spotting to margins of all plates and text leaves.) Original morocco-backed covers (some loss to spine, rubbing to all extremities). - And three other volumes illustrated by Doré (5).

TWARDOWSKI, Samuel. Woyna [Wojna] Domowa Z-Kozaki I Tatary Moskwa, potym Szwedami i z-Wegry [A Civil War with the Cossacks and Tatars, Muscovy, and then with the Swedes and Hungarians]. Kalisz: Typis Collegii Calissiensis Soc Jesu, 1681. Folio (290 x 187mm.) Engraved frontispiece, text in Polish. (Heavy soiling and spotting, many leaves torn with loss and reinforced, lacking all leaves after Yyy1, some worm damage, occasionally affecting text, old dampstaining, frontispiece with sections replaced in facsimile.) Late 19th century Russia backed boards (scuffed and rubbed, some leaves now loosely inserted). Provenance: signature and two inkstamps to title and inkstamp to rear free endpaper). - And three other 18th century Polish volumes (4).

BIBLE, in English. The Royal Bible: or, a Complete Body of Christian Divinity containing the Holy Scriptures at Large, and a full and clear Explanation of all the difficult Texts… together with critical Notes and Observations on the Whole… by Leonard Howard. London: printed for J. Pottinger, 1761-1762. Mixed editions, 2 vols., folio (337 x 229mm.) Frontispiece of Leonard Howard, title ruled in red and black, family and clerical annotation from 19th century on verso of introduction, numerous full-page copper-engraved plates. (Marginal tears, browning.) Contemporary calf (lower board detached from vol. 2, vol. 1 with covers holding with a leather repair across spine, preliminaries and first quire now disbound of vol. 1, last leaves of both volumes also loose.) - And one other volume ('The Works of Flavius Josephus', 1733, first translation by J.Court, folio) (3).
