MANUSCRIPT. - C.T.R SCOVELL. The Log of the 'Godwit', being the Record of a Voyage of over 7,000 miles from England to India in a 25-ton Yacht. [N.p.:] 1903. Privately printed 'dummy' copy, 8vo (212 x 134mm.) Numerous photographic illustrations, includes 4pp. of hand-written notes to the rear in the author's hand on 'Expenses' and 'Ships Stores', hand-written annotations to the text by the author. (Initial blank lacking, toning.) Contemporary black half-morocco, gilt titling to spine (damp-staining to upper cover). Note: with some technical detail, the author logs in diary form the incidents during the crossing of the 'Godwit' from Gosport to Bombay between 24th October 1902 to the 3rd March 1903. With a crew of five and a trusted skipper the yacht sets out from Gosport and, inevitably, many of the entries relate the weather and the miles logged, the reading of sea charts and chronometers, but also the various stops at Malta, Athens, Cairo and Suez to see the sights, sending two of the crew home by steamer and instead recruiting cheaper Arab sailors en route. Finally, having reached Bombay there is the reflection 'nothing will ever induce me to attempt a similar voyage without a motor'. - And three related volumes (Dixon Kemp's 'Yacht Racing Calendar', 1888-1890, 8vo) (4).
