(Occasional light spotting to text, spotting to pastedowns, number on half-title of volume 1.) Contemporary blind-stamped vellum, ink lettering to spines, leather clasps (soiling, lacking bosses). Provenance: Benedictine Monaestry, Burani (ink inscribed on title-pages); Jacob J. Rome: Typis Antonii de Rubeis apud Pantheon, 1720. 4to (271 x 198mm.) Engraved frontispiece of St. Paul effigies, engraved plate of coins. (Toning, spotting to rear pastedown.) Contemporary vellum, morocco lettering piece to the spine (browning, wear to spine ends, a later front-free endpaper). Note: an early biography of Pope Paul II who was ruler of the Papal states from 1464 to 1471. - And a related volume of Catholic biography ('Della Vita. E dell' Istituto Dis. Ignazio Fondatore della Compagnia di Gesu', 1735, 8vo) (2).

SLAVERY. - Henry BOLINGBROKE. A Voyage to the Demerary, containing a Statistical Account of the Settlements There, and of those on the Essequebo, the Berbice, and other Contiguous Rivers of Guyana. London: for Richard Phillips, [1807.] First edition, 4to (283 x 218mm.) Folding map. (Browning and two small closed tears to map, toning to margins, small paper repair to front and rear blanks, light spotting.) Contemporary paper-covered boards, later paper label to spine (rebacked, rubbing to cover edges). Note: annexed from the Dutch in 1803, this is an account of the Dutch planters, slavery, the coffee and sugar plantations, considerably more observational and anecdotal than the title suggests. Provenance: George Atkinson (name inscribed to front pastedown). [Sabin 6182].

POE, Edgar Allan. The Works… with an introduction and memoir by Richard Henry Stoddard. London: George Routledge & Sons, 1896. 5 vols. (of 6). Fordham edition, 8vo (188 x 115mm.) 6 plates, 6 folding facsimiles. (Browning and spotting to preliminaries and rear blanks, volume IV lacking front-free endpaper.) Original blue cloth with scrolling gilt foliate to the spines (bumped to extremities, a few marks to lower cover of volume V). Provenance: Clement Whitehead (pencil name to front-free endpapers). - And a further seven miscellaneous volumes (including Shirley Hibberd's 'The Amateur's Kitchen Garden', 1877, 8vo) (12).

(Mild toning, name inscribed to front-free endpaper of 'The Fellowship of the Ring'.) Original cloth (some damp-spotting to covers of 'The Return of the King', occasional marks to 'The Two Towers'), dust-jackets ('Return of the King' and 'The Two Towers' are price-clipped, browning to spine and margins). Note: 'The Fellowship of the Ring' is the 13th impression, both 'The Two Towers' and 'The Return of the King' are 10th impressions (3).

Numerous chromolithographed plates and designs by Walter Crane. (Light spotting.) (Repair to the frontispiece, toning, occasional spotting and to fore-edge, front and rear blanks replaced.) Later full calf, gilt lettering to spine, pen-and-ink endpapers in facsimile of the original. - And a further five volumes by A.A. [Plates only]. (348 x 245mm.) Title, 100 loose-leaf aquatint plates, several with amateur hand-colouring. (Lacking text, plates and title loose, some chipping to margins.) Near contemporary green morocco backed cloth (disbound, worn). Note: this volume is a complete set of the plates found within all three volumes.

BINDINGS. - Alexander DUMAS. [The Novels.] London: George Routledge & Sons., [circa 1884.] 14 vols. (only). 8vo (186 x 125mm.) Numerous plates. (Browning to preliminaries.) Near contemporary brown half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, red and green lettering pieces to the second and fourth compartments of the spines, foliate gilt design to the rest (slight fading, light rubbing). Provenance: Harold Byers (name inscribed to initial blanks). - And a further set of bindings ('The Pictorial Edition of the Works of Shakespeare' edited by Charles Knight, bound by J. & E. Note: Francis' first novel 'Dead Cert' comes in the signed limited edition published by the Armchair Detective Library, published in 1989. There are a further nine more volumes signed by the author.
