(Browning, intermittent spotting, sometimes heavier in preliminaries.) Mid-19th century brown calf over marbled paper-covered boards, two black morocco pieces to the spines, t.e.g. (some rubbing to spine ends, slight loss to top of spine of volumes 1 and 18, minor loss to lettering piece of volume 1, browning to bookplates). Provenance: Ernst Leopold S. Benzon (bookplates to the front pastedowns) (18).

[FÉNELON, Francois de Salignac de la Mothe-]. The Adventures of Telemaachus, the Son of Ulysses. London: A. and J. Churchill, 1703. Third edition, 12mo (157 x 90mm.) In 5 parts, separate title pages for each part and separate pagination, with 'The Adventures of Aristonous' to rear, 1p. publisher's advertisement. (Marginal damp-staining throughout, especially in Part 1 and 5, marginal insect damage from Q1 to Y5, browning.) Contemporary paper-covered boards (lacking spine panel, worn). Note: scarce. Provenance: S. Cox (name inscribed to title-page). - And a further six volumes (including 'Plutarch's Lives', 1683-1686, 4 vols. (of 5), 8vo) (7).

POETRY. - Rainer Maria RILKE. Requiem. Leipzig: Insel-Verlag, 1909. Limited edition, this being number 39 of 500 copies, 8vo (209 x 140mm.) (Toning, name inscribed to front pastedown.) Original pink cloth, black lettering to spine (wear with some loss at top of spine, spine seam splitting). Note: scarce. Written as a tribute for his friend, the painter Paula Modershon-Becker.

POETRY. - E.E. CUMMINGS. & [Ampersand]. New York: Privately Printed, 1925. Limited edition, this being number 214 of 333 copies, 8vo (213 x 138mm.) (Toning, minor soiling to p.50.) Original green boards (loss to half of spine, rubbing to extremities). Note: limitation number in ink. Cumming's first book of poems had appeared two years earlier, in 1923. Cummings wanted that volume to be called 'Tuilips & Chimneys' but the publisher over-ruled and the book came out as 'Tuilips and Chimneys' and with fewer poems than he wanted. So Cummings privately printed this volume which contains those excluded poems and is titled, simply, '&'. An early example of his typographical originality. Provenance: John Housmann (name inscribed to front-free endpaper).

Woodcut device on title, numerous woodcut initials, Salviati's 'approbation' and seal on leaf Oo5. (Toning, textblock loose from covers and cracked in several places, title loose.) 18th century calf, later morocco titling to spine (rebacked, worn).

BELL, James (translator). - Don Ignacio Lopez DE AYALA. The History of Gibraltar, from the earliest period of its occupation by the Saracens. London: William Pickering, 1845. First translated edition, 8vo (168 x 100mm.) Folding colour lithographed frontispiece, appendix to rear. (Some creasing to folds of frontispiece, toning, lacking half-title?) Original brown cloth, paper label to spine (loss to top of label, light rubbing, upper cover damp-affected). Provenance: W.J.F. Hallway (name printed to front-free endpaper).

CAREY, David. Life in Paris; comprising the Rambles, Sprees, and Amours, of Dick Wildfire, of Corinthian Celebrity. London: John Fairburn, 1822. First edition, 8vo (213 x 127mm.) Title with uncoloured vignette, 21 hand-coloured aquatint plates by George Cruikshank, including frontispiece, wood-engraved illustrations. (Toning, occasional browning, slight spotting, lacking half-title and lacking 'to the binder' leaf at rear, but has offsetting of that leaf verso last text leaf.) Contemporary polished calf, blind-stamped borders and gilt titling to the spine (light rubbing, staining to lower cover, endpapers replaced). [Tooley, 129.].

ANTIQUITIES. - Bernard de MONTFAUCON. The Travels of the Learned Father Montfaucon from Paris thro' Italy. London: by D.L. for E. Curll, 1712. First English translation, small 4to (184 x 108mm.) 4 engraved folding plates, 1 plate and numerous engraved illustrations in the text, 13pp. index and 1pp. publisher's advertisement to rear. (Browning, annotations in ink on the initial blank and occasionally thereafter, ink scrawl to margin of title-page, blank replaced at rear.) Late 18th century calf, black morocco lettering piece to the spine, g.e. (loss to top of spine, some discolouring to boards, light rubbing, upper joint splitting, endpapers replaced). Note: there is a variant edition that has an additional title-page and the publication date in Arabic, this edition doesn't have the additional title and the date is in Roman numerals.
