Near contemporary black half morocco over black buckram (volume 1 with boards detached and spine lacking, rubbing to all extremities). Note: Charlotte Bronte's third novel. Near contemporary red half morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, t.e.g. (rubbing to spine ends and all extremities) (4).

BURTON, Richard F. Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to El-Medinah and Mecca. London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1855-1856. 3 vols., first edition, 8vo (213 x 133mm.) 14 plates, including 8 tinted lithographs, 5 chromo-lithographed and 1 wood-engraved plate, 3 folding maps and plans, errata leaf in volume 1. (Toning, 1 quire loosening in volume 1, 1 plate mounted later, lacking advertisements, lacking half-title to vol. 3.) Bound to style in 21st century blue cloth, gilt lettering to spines (endpapers replaced). Note: only vol. 3 calls for a half-title. Burton was the first English Christian to enter Mecca and the first European to travel between the holy cities of Islam by the Eastern route. It was on this pilgrimage that he dressed in disguise as an Indian Muslim and where- performing the rituals of the hajj and witnessing the sermon at the end of the pilgrimage - he came to understand Islam as being equally profound as Christianity and Judaism. AFRICA. - F.L. JAMES. The Unknown Horn of Africa, An Exploration From Berbera to the Leopard River. London: George Phillip & Son, 1888. First edition, first issue, 8vo (226 x 154mm.) Half-title, 19 plates, including 9 hand-coloured lithographs of natural history subjects, mainly birds by Keulemans. (Lacking four plates and the folding map to rear, toning, occasional minor soiling.) Original brown cloth with pictorial gilt (covers weakened, rubbing).

HAMP, Pierre. Kitchen Prelude (Mes Métiers)… translated from the French by Dorothy Bolton. London: Constable & Co. Ltd., 1932. First U.K. edition, 8vo (185 x 120mm.) 2pp. publisher's advertisement to rear. (Toning, faint spotting to preliminaries, odd spots of minor staining.) Original pale blue cloth (sunned to spine), dust-jacket (spine panel browned with chipping to ends and small, closed tear, slight spotting to lower panel). Note: rare. Known for writing about the working conditions of his age, Pierre Hamp [Henri Bourrillion] here writes of his early years as a pastry chef and cook at the Savoy and Berkeley hotels in London, the Restaurant Marguery in Paris, and also the Metropole in Brighton.

COOKERY. - Austin de CROZE. What to Eat and Drink in France. London: Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd., 1931. First edition, 8vo (186 x 122mm.) 29pp. index to rear. (Toning, spotting to the half-title, marginal tears to p.249, p.251 and p.309, offsetting to endpapers.) Original grey pictorial cloth with blue lettering (lightly bumped spine ends), dust-jacket designed by M.H.B.J. (minor staining and crease to lower panel, two neat repairs verso, price-clipped). Note: scarce. Austin de Croze wrote on folk-lore and music but his work on gastronomy has been more significant and his focus on regional food has led him to being considered an originator of the 'food heritage movement'. Provenance: 'Olive and Will' (gift inscribed from on the half-title).

CRADDOCK, Harry. The Savoy Cocktail Book. London: Constable & Company, Ltd., 1930. First edition, first issue, 8vo (191 x 122mm.) Numerous illustrations by Gilbert Rumbold, the tipped-in 'Bacardi Cocktail' slip on p.25. (Toning, minor marks to p.11 and p.53.) Original boards with art deco design (surface abrasion to lower cover, spine seam split and upper cover weakening, rubbing to extremities). Note: first issue with the numbered title-page.

WELLS, H.G. The Time Machine. An Invention. London: William Heinemann, 1895. First edition, 8vo (176 x 113mm.) Half-title with 1p. advertisement for 'The Pioneer Series' verso, 32pp. of publisher's advertisements to rear. (Toning, spotting to last few leaves of advertisements and both endpapers, C8 and F8 with marginal tears, no loss.) Original publisher's oatmeal buckram with author's monogram to lower cover and the sphinx to the upper cover (faint mark to upper cover). Note: the advertisements begin with 'Donovan Pasha' by Gilbert Parker and end with Gabriele D'Annunzio's 'The Virgin of the Rocks', indicating slightly later-issue advertisements. 'The Time Machine' was Wells' first work of fiction and the also the first work of science fiction to involve time travel.

Original maroon cloth (extremities bumped), dust-jacket (spotting to inner flaps, chipping and small tear at top of spine panel). Provenance: I. Gaunt (name inscribed on the front-free endpaper).

JOYCE, James. Ulysses. London: for Egoist Press by John Rodker, Paris, 1922. First U.K. edition, number 661 of 2000 copies, 4to (221 x 170mm.) Half-title, 2 initial blanks, 8pp. errata to rear. (Toning, spotting to blanks and occasional spotting to text, browned to margins, 1 initial blank a replacement, lacking blank to rear, a printing error on p.398, marginal loss and slight soiling to p.247, small mark to p.705.) Mid-20th century blue half morocco bound by Ramage, t.e.g. (slight fading and staining to upper cover, endpapers replaced). Note: due to censorship over 500 copies of this print run were destroyed by custom officials on both sides of the Atlantic.
