Asian and Islamic Ceramics and Works of Art

A collection of Asian art reference books, including 'Ko-Imari porcelain from the collection of Oliver Impey' by Barry Davies Oriental Art Ltd, 1997, 'Mingei: Japanese Folk Art' by Robert Moes, 1995, 'Japanese Porcelain' by Soame Jenyns, 1965, 'Japanese Pottery' by Soame Jenyns, 1971, and 'Indian Art in the Ashmolean Museum' by J.C. Harle and Andrew Topsfield. Provenance: from the private collection of David Armitage, former conservator to the Department of Eastern Art at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, between 1970 and 1999.

A Japanese cloisonné vase, Meiji period, of shouldered tapering form, decorated with wisteria and chrysanthemum on a gilt speckled dark green ground, stamped mark to base, height 18.5cm (bruise to shoulder), together with a group of five other Japanese cloisonné vases, unsigned, heights ranging from 8.7cm to 19cm (some faults).

A pair of Chinese famille verte decorated porcelain vases, early 20th century, each ovoid body and flared neck painted with battle scenes within iron oxide washed borders, with applied chilong to shoulders and Buddhistic lion handles, height 44.6cm (one with rim repair).

A Chinese provincial blue and white porcelain ginger jar, Qing dynasty, of stout ovoid form, painted with a wide band of scrolling tendrils beneath a ruyi-head border above an upright band of squared lappets, height 22cm.

A Chinese turquoise glazed porcelain figure of Buddha, Qing dynasty, height 7cm, with gilt metal candlestick mounts, the flower-form sconce above stem issuing porcelain flowers, on a circular base, total height 16cm.

A Chinese famille rose porcelain bowl, mark of Guangxu but probably 20th century, of steep-sided circular form, painted to inside and out with trailing fruiting vines and bamboo, underglaze blue six-character mark to base, height 8.4cm, diameter 19.3cm.

A Chinese celadon glazed porcelain pedestal bowl, the hemispherical bowl with knopped stem and domed foot, underglaze blue four-character Jia Yin Tang Zhi (made for the well shaped hall) mark to underside of foot, height 13.7cm, diameter 17.4cm.

Two Japanese dolls, early 20th century, one of a seated samurai, the other of a seated bijin, both with silk costume, heights 14cm, on a plinth base, housed within a pine case with glazed front.

A Chinese Shiwan pottery sang-de-boeuf glazed figure of an immortal, mid-20th century, modelled seated on a rock ledge, unsigned, height 29cm.

Ohara Koson (1877-1945) - two Japanese woodblock prints, one depicting an owl and moon, 24.2cm x 25cm, the other with an eagle, 34.5cm x 19cm, together with four other Japanese woodblock prints, including Ogata Gekko (1859-1920) Study of a Rabbit, 24cm x 25cm, and Okuhara Seiko (1837-1913) Study of Two Larks, 24cm x 25cm, all unframed.

A Japanese gilt bronze tripod brazier (furo), Meiji period, of compressed circular form with pierced apertures, flanked by a pair of lion mask and loose ring handles, height 10.5cm, width across handles 20cm.

A Chinese underglaze blue and copper red porcelain circular brushwasher, 20th century, the interior painted with blue and red confronted carp, underglaze blue four-character Jingdezhen mark to base, diameter 13.7cm.

A Chinese pale blue glazed porcelain ornament, modern, of flattened circular form, moulded with archaistic birds flanked by dragon mask and loose ring handles, on a wave moulded base, relief moulded seal mark to base, height 33cm.

Uehara Konen (1878-1940) - a Japanese woodblock print depicting torii gates, lanterns and trees at sunset, 16cm x 36.7cm, framed and glazed.

A Chinese famille rose porcelain brushwasher, probably 20th century, the ovoid cup and domed base painted with figural scenes of the Boys' Festival, blue enamelled four-character mark to base, height 8.2cm.

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - a Japanese woodblock oban tateye print depicting descending geese at Katada from the Eight Views of Omi series, 35cm x 22.5cm, unframed, together with two other Japanese woodblock prints, including a view of a snow scene on the Sumidagawa river by Keisai Eisen, 24cm x 37cm, framed and glazed.

Toyokuni III (Kunisada) - a Japanese woodblock oban tateye print depicting Danjuro VIII as Shirafuji at Kiyomi, between Okitsu and Ejiri, from the Actors at the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, 35cm x 23cm, framed and glazed, together with two other Japanese oban tateye prints, framed and glazed, and a silk mounted folder containing thirty-six reproduction Japanese prints and various watercolours, unframed.

A Chinese sang-de-boeuf glazed porcelain vase, mark of Qianlong but modern, of baluster form with flared neck, underglaze blue seal mark to base, height 38.5cm.

A small group of Japanese cloisonné wares, Meiji period, comprising two pairs of vases, heights 21.5cm and 15.5cm, a small ovoid koro and cover, height 8.2cm (missing finial), and a rectangular box and cover, length 5.4cm (some faults), together with two Chinese cloisonné vases and a cylindrical box and cover.
