Coins, Banknotes and Medallions

A small collection of British coins and medals, including three London County Council King's Medals awarded to E. Altria 1913-14, 1914-15 and 1919-1920, with cases of issue (some damage), and a Victoria Young Head shilling 1883, together with a collection of European and world coins, including a number of USA interest, including a Barber dime 1914, eleven Mercury dimes and four Washington quarters.

A small group of early hammered silver coinage, comprising an Edward III half-groat, London Mint, two Edward IV half-groats, both Canterbury Mint, and a Henry VII half-groat, Canterbury Mint, together with a modern copy of a Henry VI half-groat.

An Edward I hammered silver penny 1272-1307, Newcastle Mint, and two other Edward I hammered silver pennies, London Mint and Canterbury Mint.

A Richard II hammered silver halfpenny 1377-99, London Mint, and a possible Richard III penny with chiselled angular eyes.

A Roman Hadrian silver denarius 117-138 AD, reverse with Liberalitas seated holding branch and sceptre, weight 3.0g.

A fine early 20th century 9ct gold presentation medal awarded to J. Chaloner Smith, 6th Jan 1919, by the Institution of Civil Engineers of Ireland for his 'Notes upon the average volume of flow water from large catchment areas in Ireland', obverse with portrait bust of Michael Bernard Mullins (1808-1871), a famous civil engineer in Ireland, reverse with inscription, with fitted red leather-effect box. Note: John Chaloner Smith (1870-1932) was born in County Mayo on 7th November 1870 and worked in the Belfast and Northern County railways from 1891 to 1892 as an assistant, then later helped with alterations to the district lunatic asylum at Castlebar, County Mayo. Shortly after 1896, he joined the Public Works Office as an inspector and became a leading expert in water levels and rainfall.

Provenance: purchased from Timothy Millett Ltd 14.12.06.

A mid-18th century gilt bronze medal commemorating the capture of Cartagena 1741, obverse with Admiral Blas de Lezo kneeling before Admiral Edward Vernon and Rear-Admiral Sir Chaloner Ogle standing right, reverse with two ships entering Cartagena harbour, Blas to the front in a rowing boat, the town beyond, diameter 38mm (good/very fine, gilding of period, some loss to high points). Provenance: ex-Noonan's sale 13th July 2011, ex-Baldwin's Auction 33, 6th-7th May 2003, Lot 1299.

A mid-18th century pinchbeck medal commemorating the Battle of Cartagena 1741, obverse with Admiral Edward Vernon and Rear-Admiral Sir Chaloner Ogle standing, detailed 'We look for Don Blass' below, reverse with two ships entering Cartagena harbour, Blas to the front in a rowing boat, the town beyond, diameter 37mm (good/very fine, some partial gilt remaining). Provenance: purchased from Timothy Millett Ltd 15.7.2005 for £150.

A mid-18th century Admiral Vernon medal commemorating the attack and capture of Portobello 1739, obverse with Admiral Edward Vernon, Rear-Admiral Sir Chaloner Ogle and Brigadier-General Thomas Wentworth standing, two small lions at their feet, reverse with ships at the entrance of Portobello harbour, diameter 38mm (good/very fine, weak at points within striking). Provenance: ex-Baldwin's sale 28/9/14.

A mid-18th century pinchbeck Admiral Vernon medal commemorating the attack and capture of Portobello 1739, obverse with Admiral Edward Vernon, Rear-Admiral Sir Chaloner Ogle and Brigadier-General Thomas Wentworth standing, two small lions at their feet, reverse with ships at the entrance of Portobello harbour, diameter 37mm (good/very fine, some patchy corrosion to surface, more noticeable on edges). Provenance: ex-Noonan's sale 14 November 2013, Lot 1307.

An Admiral Vernon commemorative medal, probably pinchbeck, circa 1739 (excavated condition), and another lead Admiral Vernon medal (part-excavated condition), ex-Mark Rasmussen Numismatist Ltd, together with a collection of ephemera related to Sir Chaloner Ogle and a numismatic publication of Admiral Vernon medals by Leander McCormick-Goodhart, 1945.

A George VI silver proof crown 1937.

A small group of Victorian and later coinage, including a Victoria Jubilee Head double florin 1889, an Edward VII half-crown 1907, an Edward VII florin 1906 and a George V half-crown 1915.

Two George III sixpences 1787 (both nearly extremely fine).
