LOT 2501
LOT 2501
A George Best red and white No. 7 Real Madrid v Manchester United 1968 European Cup semi-final second leg match-worn shirt, bearing 'Umbro Aztec Jersey' label, with crew neck collar, together with a Manchester United towel that the shirt was wrapped in when it was passed to the current owner by George Best himself. Note: the current owner of this shirt regularly travelled to Old Trafford to watch her beloved Manchester United play, along with the London & District Supporters Club. Mingling with the players before the games, she became 'pally' with David Sadler, who lodged with George and would chat with both of them before matches. Having watched the first leg of the semi-final, she also travelled to Madrid to watch the second leg, having phoned George the week before to ask for his shirt after the game. Meeting him at the team hotel as he stepped off the coach, he shoved a soaking wet bundle into her arms before Jack Crompton (kit man) could see him give the shirt away. The shirt is accompanied by the towel that it was wrapped in, a five page statement written by the vendor and copies of photographs taken on the day. It is worth noting that the shirt's number has been stitched quite high up on the back and footage of the game appears to verify this.
Estimate: £10,000 – £20,000

LOT 2502
LOT 2502
A George Best green and white No. 7 Northern Ireland reputed match-worn shirt, bearing 'The Umbro 'Real' Jersey' label, embroidered 'Irish Football Association' badge and indistinct yellow Umbro stamp, with crew neck collar and long sleeves. Note: this shirt is reputed to have been worn by George Best in the British Home Championship game against Scotland, November 25th 1964 at Hampden Park. Best scored his second international goal, opening the scoring in the 9th minute, eventually losing the game 3-2. The shirt is said to have been swapped with the Celtic striker Willie Wallace's shirt after the game. Wallace was to later become a coach at Dundee FC and this shirt was won in a Stobswell Junior Football Club gala day raffle by a member of the vendor's family. The lot is accompanied by various related newspaper cuttings. Thanks to Michael Cockcroft of the Northern Ireland Football Museum for his help in cataloguing this lot.
