A Thai gilt lacquered bronze figure of an ascetic Buddha, Rattanakosin period, 18th/19th century, modelled seated in dhyanasana on a curved triangular pedestal, his hands held in dhyana mudra, wearing a robe over his emaciated body revealing ribs and veins, his bearded face with meditative expression, the hair rising to a domed usnisa, height 35cm. Provenance: the Alain Presencer Collection; Bonhams, London, 6th November 2008, Lot 354; and Bonhams Hong Kong, 2nd October 2018, Lot 123. Note: a similar bronze depiction of an emaciated Buddha is on public display at the Wat Benchamabophit Marble Temple in Bangkok.
