LOT 4020
An unusual and scarce Japanese, Chinese-style halberd or naginata, mid-Edo period, the curved shaped blade engraved and detailed with flames picked out with red lacquer projecting from the tang, blade length 37cm, mounted with a fine cast bronze openwork dragon head, the signed tang with single hole piercing, overall length 74cm. Provenance: the collection of the late Roald Knutsen (1933-2025). Note: illustrated in ‘Japanese Spears: Polearms and Their Use in Old Japan’ by Roald & Patricia Knutsen, Global Oriental: 2004, figure 16. Roald Knutsen identified the signature as To (Sa) Mitsumasa Masakiyo.
