LOT 420
A matched pair of Victorian and later silver entrées dishes, covers and handles, each of rectangular form with scallop, flower and scroll cast borders, the handles modelled as a sphinx and engraved 'Gibraltar, Peninsula', each cover engraved 'LVIII' within a foliate scrollwork cartouche frame, London 1829 by Benjamin Smith, London 1904 by Mappin & Webb and other marks for J.E. Terrey & Co, length approx 34cm. Note: the LVIII engraved on the dishes relates to the 58th Regiment of Foot, which was formed in 1755. The 58th was granted the County Title of Rutlandshire in 1782, which it held until 1881 when it was amalgamated with the 48th (Northamptonshire Regiment of Foot), becoming the 2nd Battalion of Northamptonshire Regiment. The sphinx handles bearing inscriptions 'Peninsula' and 'Gibraltar' represent their famous campaigns where they were stationed at Gibraltar in part of the great siege from 1779-1783, in the French revolutionary wars in Egypt at the Battle of Alexandria and later, under Wellington in the Peninsular Campaign.
