LOT 851
The upper section of a gold topped presentation walking cane, the knop inscribed 'Presented to Wm. Henry Smith by Officers U.S. Navy Portsmouth 1888 "The Kearsarge"', overall length approx 38cm (cut down), together with details of the cane and Quartermaster W.H. Smith. Note: Quartermaster Smith was awarded the United States Navy's highest award, The Medal of Honour, in December 1864 for his role in an action of 19th June 1864, when the U.S.S. Kearsarge encountered the Confederate States' ship C.S.N. Alabama in the English Channel.
