SHACKLETON, Ernest. South, The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition 1914-1917. London: William Heinemann, 1919. First edition, 8vo (248 x 153mm.) Colour frontispiece, numerous uncoloured illustrations, folding map at rear. (Heavy browning, some spotting, folding map torn without loss to margin and along one fold.) Original decorative cloth blocked in silver (extremities bumped and scuffed, stitching a little loose). Spence 1107. Provenance: Winifred A. Thompson (presentation inscription from 'Gertrude M. Thompson & Evelyn R. Thompson' to preliminary blank). Together with an a.l.s. by Duncan Carse addressed to Dr Gilkes dated 'August 13, 1956' on The South Georgia Survey 1955-6 headed paper from aboard Southern Opal, discussing Shackleton (176 x 201mm.), and two other a.l.s. by Duncan Carse and Oliver regarding Shackleton. Provenance: The Michael Gilkes Collection.
