HAMERTON, Philip Gilbert. The Saône, A Summer Voyage. London: Seeley & Co., 1887. Limited edition of 275 copies, this number 218, 4to (285 x 210mm.) Title-page with decorative vignette, 16 engraved plates on India paper mounted, 4 maps, numerous illustrations. (Spotting to text leaves and plates, light browning.) Original morocco-backed cloth (corners reinforced, some recolouring, spine faded). Note: Hamerton was an accomplished engraver and illustrator producing plates for his own works including the 'Unknown River' and in 1870 established his own art journal 'The Portfolio'. This book is dedicated to Hamerton's father in law who was responsible for the voyage. Provenance: David MacBrayne (armorial bookplate to front pastedown); The Michael Gilkes Collection (bookplate to front pastedown).
