HAMERTON, Philip Gilbert. The Unknown River. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1871. 4to (275 x 179mm.) Engraved vignette to title-page, title printed in black and red, 36 engraved plates on India paper mounted, 2pp. advertisements at rear. (Browning, offsetting, occasional minor spotting, plates facing pp.10-11 loosely inserted.) Original cloth blocked in black and gilt, g.e. (rebacked with old spine laid down, some recolouring). Note: Hamerton was an accomplished engraver and illustrator producing plates for his own works and in 1870 established his own art journal 'The Portfolio'. Provenance: The Michael Gilkes Collection.
