TIPHYS, [Charles Penrose]. Practical Canoeing; a Treatise on the Management & Handling of Canoes. London: Norie & Wilson, 1883. First edition, 8vo (220 x 133mm.) Frontispiece, 4 full-page plates, illustrations, 18pp. advertisements and map at rear. (Light browning, occasional spotting or soiling.) Original brown pictorial cloth blocked in black and gilt (extremities bumped and scuffed, rebacked with majority of old spine laid down, reinforced with touches of recolouring, some damp staining, endpapers browned). Provenance: George Naish (inscription signed and dated 'George Naish, Portsmouth, 5-5-44' to preliminary blank with further inscription 'From the collection of George Naish 1978' to reverse of frontispiece); The Michael Gilkes Collection. Note: George Naish was the son of a keen maritime archaeologist and joined the National Maritime Museum in 1935, in 1940 he joined the Royal Naval Volunteer becoming lieutenant-commander on transferring on demobilisation to the Royal Naval Reserve, in 1947 Naish became Honorary Secretary to the Society for Nautical Research and attained the ranks of Keeper and Historical Consultant at the Maritime Museum.
