LOT 4071
A 19th century Arts and Crafts wooden hand printing block, worked with raised metal depicting a stylized long-eared owl perched in the branches of an oak tree, the reverse stamped 'J. Barrett', one end inscribed in paint 'N.777', height 44cm, width 31cm. Note: the 'J. Barrett' stamped to the back of this block is probably Barrett's of Bethnal Green, a specialist firm which cut blocks and rollers for Morris & Co and Jeffrey's. This firm is mentioned in 'William Morris', edited by Linda Parry, p.222. An owl resembling the one on this block can be seen on the 'Owl and Pigeon' wall hanging designed by John Henry Dearle, illustrated in the same book, p.250.
