BRIDAL TOUR. A vellum-bound journal by John Batten dated May 1841, describing a tour with his new wife, Grace Eleanor White, to Paris, Nice, Lucca, Florence and Rome. When in Genoa he writes: 'trade is carried on with places in the East infested with the plague and the regulations are most strict to prevent it being brought here' and in Rome he describes St Peter's as: 'much too clean for the grandest Cathedral in the world... think of St. Paul's whitewashed'.
