LOT 1195
An early 19th century French ormolu mantel timepiece, the drum cased movement with silk suspension, the engine turned circular dial with black Roman hour numerals, the case modelled as Barry the famous St. Bernard rescue dog, carrying a rescued boy to the safety of a brick hospice, on a rectangular plinth base applied with a floral swag, on engine turned feet, height 28cm, with pendulum. Note: Barry der Menschenretter (1800-1814), also known as Barry, was a St. Bernard rescue dog in Switzerland and Italy, who was credited with saving more than 40 lives in his lifetime, hence his byname 'Menschenretter', meaning 'People Rescuer' in German. The dog's story has been celebrated in literature, film and art. Barry's preserved taxidermized body is currently on display at the Natural History Museum in Bern.
