(Toning, light spotting to endpapers, several ink line marks to margins, and several annotations to text, mainly altering in manuscript blue ink the American 'subway' for the English 'underground'.) Original black cloth (large damp-stain to covers), dust-jacket (chipping and small tears to extremities). Note: Baldwin's first novel. Provenance: George R. (ink name to front-free endpaper).
