A fine mid-19th century English gilt brass carriage clock by James McCabe, London, No. 2946, circa 1860, the eight day twin chain fusee movement with large platform lever escapement, bimetallic compensated balance and blued steel hairspring with overcoil and maintaining power, striking hours on a gong with push repeat mechanism, the backplate signed 'James McCabe London 2946', the gilt engine turned dial with black Roman hour numerals and blued steel fleur-de-lys hands, above a signed scroll cartouche detailed 'James McCabe Royal Exchange London 946', the well proportioned large case with scroll and reeded swing handle above bevelled glass panels and solid shuttered back panel with apertures for winding, hand setting, strike/silent and regulation, height including handle 18.7cm, with original numbered key and original red morocco leather mounted case, the hinged lid with key compartment. Note: a similarly cased carriage clock by James McCabe, No. 3354, is illustrated on page 281, plate IX/64, of 'Carriage Clocks, Their History and Development' by Charles Allix and Peter Bonnert. A carriage clock of the same design and size by James McCabe, No. 2886, was sold at Bonhams London, New Bond Street, 9th July 2014, Lot 32.
