PIRATES. – John COCKBURN. A Faithful Account of the Distresses and Adventures of John Cockburn, Mariner, and Five other Englishmen who Were taken Prisoners by a Spanish Pyrate; treated in the most Inhuman Manner; set on Shore, on an Uninhabited Island, Naked and Wounded, and obliged to Travel over Land from the Gulf of Honduras to the Great South-Sea, being 2400 Miles. London: C. Rivington, at the Bible and Crown in St. Paul’s Church-Yard, 1740. Second edition, 8vo (189 x 119mm.) 2 parts in 1, folding engraved map bound after title, separate title to part 2, 3pp. publisher’s advertisements to rear. (Toning, some corner loss to map with tears to folds, blanks replaced, occasional ink and pencil annotation, staining to P7.) Early 19th century half calf (extremities rubbed, wear to spine ends, lacking front-free endpaper). Note: an account so extraordinary that it was considered at first to be a fictional work. Provenance: William Hanson (ink name to first text leaf).
